We've always had the idea of giving everyone the ability to talk to each other off the server's screen.
That way they can chat, discuss whatever they like, etc.
After considering several options with the Admins we came up with the best solution.
IRC, Internet Relay Chat, via SwiftKit.
Channel List
#BBs-PK - Offical BBs-PK IRC Channel
#BBs-Staff - Staff channel, Mods+ only
1. ExplanationSwiftKit is a toolkit used for runescape, it has a chat called IRC installed in it.
I think that if people can use it while they play RuneScape, we can use it while we play BBs.
You can make friends, buy & sell things, ask questions, and chill in the IRC channels.
2. DownloadingDownload SwiftKit from its offical website,
http://swiftkit.net/We don't recommend you use it for RuneScape purposes, but it is up to you.
3. Logging inAfter downloading SwiftKit and opening it, click 'launch', it could take a few minutes and restart the download once or twice, just be patient.

Once your in...
i- Begin by clicking 'Utilities' at the top left corner, next to 'file' and 'view'.
ii- Click the 2nd last option 'IRC Client (Chat).
[
http://puu.sh/3ThQ ]
iii- Type a nickname you wish to use, it cannot be something someone is using or is registered to someone else, SwiftKit will tell you if its registered to someone else and/or is being used so don't worry.
iv- Type #BBs-PK in the 'channel' section, then click 'Connect' and wait for it to open up. [
http://puu.sh/3Tid ]
Note: If the system says the nickname you've chosen is taken then just change your nickname to another one by typing:
- Code:
-
/nick [New Nickname]
v- Type the code:
- Code:
-
/options
Click the right tab where it says 'Irc', and untick the box that says 'enable message filtering'. Click 'Ok/Apply' and close IRC and connect again.
[
http://puu.sh/3Tiq ]
vi- Register your nickname so that nobody else can use it, to do this type
- Code:
-
/ns register [Password] [Repeat Password] [E-mail] [Repeat E-mail]
Type a safe password where it says 'password', and type your email where it says 'E-mail'.
[
http://puu.sh/3TiR ]
vii- Check your E-mail inbox (and junk/spam folder if necessary) and find a code they have sent you, enter it to confirm your registration, if you have any problems PM an Admin by double clicking on my nickname 'Kevin|'.
- Code:
-
/ns confirm XXXXXXXX
viii- Close IRC, and click on the 'options' box on the left, click 'Add'.
Fill in the spaces like this, any unfilled ones aren't required: [
http://puu.sh/3Tjj ]
To add channels where it says 'Auto-join channels' click 'Add' and type the channels which we have put lower in this topic, with the exception of the staff channel if you are not staff since you wouldn't be able to access it anyway.
You can leave the 'Key/Password' slot empty because none of the channels have any of those.
If you make a mistake click the channel in the box and click 'remove'.
Finally, tick all 4 of the boxes at the bottom and click 'save'.
ix- Click 'Apply' then 'Ok' at the bottom-right corner, then click where it says 'Quick connect' at the top-centre of the page and choose the Server name you have chosen such as 'BBs-Pk' or whatever you have called it and click 'Connect'
x- You are now connected to IRC, and you can now create a group of nicknames owned only by you, this can be done by changing your nickname to the one you desire to use and typing:
- Code:
-
/ns group [Main Nickname] [Main Nickname's Password]
Your 'Main Nickname' is the first one you registered with your E-mail, etc. and the nickname's password.
We recommend using this to register one that says you are Away/Busy. (E.g Kevin| is my main nickname, and I have a nickname called 'Kevin|Away' to show that I am not available at that time.)
When you log on, a topic will be shown, this is set by an Admin and will just give a brief explanation of what each channel is about and the name of the other channels, etc.
Directly under it is a dark red sentence which contains links to the BBs-PK forums and IRC's Wiki-page for assistance on available commands, modes, etc. This is to ensure that everyone knows how to use IRC effectively.
4. Rank SystemRanks are given by the Owners only.
They set the ranks (Access levels), and then the IRC server will give you a special 'mode' that corresponds with your access level.
There are 6 ranks inside IRC, they are:
- No rank (black, no mode for user)
- Voice (blue, mode +v for user)
- Halfop (Half Operator) - Half Operator (orange, mode +h for user)
- Operator (red, mode +o for user)
- Admin Operator (red, mode +a for user)
- Founder (red, mode +q for user)
Here is how they will be given out:
- No rank - Normal players.
- Voice - Old School players and Premium members (Level 3 access)
- Halfop - Moderators (Level 4 access)
- Operator - Admins (Levels 5-9 access)
- Admin Operator - Owners (Access levels for this rank range from 10-9999)
- Founder - Only me
People with access level 4 (Halfop) and above can perform commands such as kick and ban anyone with lower access. This applies to people in the same rank but with different access level aswell. (E.g Someone with 9999 access can still kick and ban someone with 5000 access, even though they hold the same rank of 'Admin Operator')
5. HighlightHighlighting is when someone calls out your name, whether its your current nickname/ingame name/real life name, etc., your computer beeps to show someone typed that, its used for people that usually are focused on something else, e.g playing RS while using IRC. It's helpful because then you can still keep in touch with each other even when your not focused on ALL the channels your in.
To do this:
- Type:
- Code:
-
/options
- Click the tab on the far right that says 'IRC'.
- Tick the 2 boxes on the top left, and make sure the 3 boxes on the bottom left are all ticked EXCEPT for the one that says 'Enable message filtering, that one must stay unticked.
- Click 'Add' near the blank box, and add in a name you want to be higlighted with (Your username in BBs + Irl name), also add the name [ $me ] into the box just incase you forget to add the nickname your using.
- Click 'Ok/Apply' to finish it.
This is how it should look like at the end: [
http://puu.sh/3TjI ]
Just to point something very important out, you can be afk while your on IRC, just change your name to something that says 'Afk/Away/Sleep/Busy/etc.' at the end (I have explained how to group nicknames together above), we need the IRC channel to have as much players on it as possible, even if they are not there, so please do this instead of closing IRC!6. Wrap-upWe hope this covered most of whats needed, please let us know if there is anything else you'd like us to explain.
We really need you guys to help us out on this project, it's been something we had hoped to create for this server for a long time.
It's hugely going to benefit the server by reducing spam, and bringing everyone together as a community.
Once again, if you need anything, whether it's about IRC or the server itself, please don't hesitate to PM an Admin on the forums, IRC, or ingame.
Channel List
#BBs-PK - Offical BBs-PK IRC Channel
#BBs-Staff - Staff channel, Mods+ only
To join an additional channel, go back to the tab that says 'Start' and open your connection by pressing 'Options' then clicking on the connection shown in the big box on the right and clicking 'Edit' then add a channel by clicking 'Add' and following the steps mentioned earlier.
Note: Anything coloured in blue inside IRC can be clicked (Channel names like #BBs-PK aswell as website hyperlinks in blue), if someone types #bbs-pk for example, you can just click it and you will join the channel instantly, the same is with hyperlinks, they can be instantly opened when right-clicked.
Special thanks to Edan for suggesting pics, and Bob for coming up with the idea.
